Joy, Tal and Meriam’s Growing 2015

Best thing this year, was finding out how to plant maize. Maize is a good vegetable, I enjoy eating it, it has a natural taste, what we grow is better than the market, its very hard, not like the soft market one. It doesn’t taste of chemicals, we use manure to make it grow, putting nutrients in the soil makes it grow.

Tal, also lived nearby and has been involved in the garden for around 2 years. She’s an active organiser and keen to get the best out of the project, for her:

The best part of the garden this year, was planting a lot of things, maize, pumpkins, beans, onion, garlic and potato’s, and that we eat them all, this is the success of the garden. The vegetables, we each take some, small, small bits each we share.

Other interesting events, Glodel’s birthday party was very nice, the BBQ’s we had, all people from the project come and we invite other people from the community. We had students come to, NCS the challenge students, we exchanged drama sessions and other things as well as them coming to the garden, it was very nice, they were doing a professional act of the situation people face.

Meriam, travels from Walsall, she has little English but a big smile and a keen nature to get involved and learn all the time.

She comes to look at people, talk to people, we can relax, nice, beautiful. Sometimes eating, sometimes talking, sometimes laughing. Then you have to finish talking and start working.

All the time she eats this food we grow, ‘I take home and cook in my house, I cooked this last week, the beans are very nice. Next week we will cook carrots and sweetcorn.
